See Mike's site, Ancient Near Eastern Languages for those.

Ancient Near Eastern Literature in English translation The books by Sparks and Walton are basically guides and bibliographies. Arnold has a few readings (very select). The best anthology of Sumerian and Mesopotamian material is Benjamin Foster's Before the Muses. His shorter book (From Distant Days) has fewer texts but is more affordable. Jacobsen's book is a classic for Sumerian texts. For Egyptian material, John Foster's volume has the most coverage in a one-volume format. The major sets are Context of Scripture and Pritchard, but they are expensive.
Most recommended: Walton & Hill (but Arnold is for absolute beginners)
Israelite History and Religion Most recommended: all; Hess is a leading scholar and an evangelical; Smith's book is a nice introduction to the data (those familiar with my own work will know I have some disagreements with Smith); Cross' work is for more advanced readers; it is a class in this area.
most recommended: Charlesworth (both vols); DeSilva; Evans
most recommended: VanderKam & Nickelsburg translation (others are technical works)
