You've heard the hype & read the claims of the book:

“Jesus and Mary Magdalene were married and had a child.  The Gnostic gospels from Nag Hammadi contain proof of this.”

“The Gnostic Nag Hammadi gospels are as old as the gospels in the New Testament . . .  they were voted out by the Catholic Church at the Council of Nicea in A.D. 325.  The Dead Sea Scrolls are also early Christian texts.”

“The idea that Jesus was God in the flesh was not part of original Christianity.  That idea was invented by Constantine for political reasons as the Council debated the teachings of Arius, that Jesus was not God.”

“Official forms of Christianity (Catholic, and then Protestant) had a low view of women, while Gnosticism had a high view of women.”

You've wondered about some of the traditional teachings about Jesus:

"How can Isaiah 7:14 refer to the virgin Mary and the virgin birth of Jesus when the next few verses (Isaiah 7:15-16) have the prophecy being fulfilled a few years after it was given—in Isaiah's own time, centuries before Mary ever lived?"

"Why is Jesus called the 'only begotten son of God' when there are other 'sons of God' in the Old Testament, like Psalm 82:1,6; Genesis 6:1-4; and Psalm 89:5-8?"

Now get the facts in plain language from a scholar you know and  trust.

Mike recommends the following book responses to The Da Vinci CodeCracking Da Vinci's Code, by Peter Jones and James Garlow; The Da Vinci Hoax, by Sandra Miesel and Carl Olson.

In June of 2005, Mike participated in a conference entitled, "The DaVinci Code: The Hype and the History."  Mike's topic ("How Did Jesus Become God?") concerned the claim in The Da Vinci Code and resource books used by author Dan Brown to make the claim that the idea that the deity of Jesus was contrived by Constantine.  Mike's treatment of this question derives in part from his PhD dissertation work.
